While a "hands-on" component of the course can be beneficial, even a top-of-the-line CPR manikin dog is a poor example of the actual feel of working with a real animal. Many in-person CPR courses actually used stuffed animals to do demonstrations on. Since no specialized equipment is necessary to do a hands-on portion, you are able to any hands-on component of the course at home.
The best hands-on component of the course you can do is to actually practice the non-invasive treatments with your pet (NOT CPR or the Heimlich maneuver) if they are willing and cooperative. In addition, finding the physical landmarks shown in the videos on your pets body, establishing and noting normal behavior for your pet, and putting together a pet first aid and disaster preparedness kit will do a far better job of preparing you for an actual emergency than compressing on a stuffed animal in a classroom.
