Dogs and cats that suffocate while submerged underwater suffer near drowning. If you notice your pet submerged in water, immediately remove them and put them in a position to help water run from their nose and mouth. Lift your pet in the air and have their head pointed downward. In larger animals lift up their hind legs so their head is pointed downward. After you have done this you must asses your pets' vitals and if they are unconscious and not breathing you may need to perform rescue breathing. If there is no pulse, full CPR will be necessary. If your pet seems normal there still could be a possibility that they have ingested a large amount of water and it's important to get them checked out by your veterinarian.
