Early signs of breathing change include: flexing their abdominal muscles to try to breathe, flaring nostrils, using neck muscles to try to breathe in, coughing, spread elbows, loud breathing, or discoloration of the gums. If any of these signs are observed, there isn't much you can do at home. Taking your pet to the vet is your next step.
